ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

We have policies in place to manage our sustainability and environmental impact.

Light Footprint Tourism
We have used Bricks, stones and wood for most part of the building in our architecture. This is in harmony with the local surroundings and seamlessly merges our property with the local settlement. These materials are also sourced from the vicinity of the town creating minimal footprint .
We have used local artefacts, furniture and furnishings to give the local feel as well as reducing the footprint. Except for the electrical, electronic and plumbing equipment , we have tried to locally source and craft the necessary interior items.
We have tried to identify local sources for menu being served in our F&B outlets. Our curator of Food experience curated our food with a philosophy of local ingredients, minimal footprint, traditional ethos and contemporary presentation. This has contributed towards engaging the local farming community with our efforts.

No Single-Use Plastic
We have tried to restrict single use plastics at The Nanee. We have been using local textile handmade bags for our amenity bags, day bags, laundry bags and hairdryer bags in the guest rooms. For shampoos and lotions, we use local handmade ceramic pots. Furthermore, we have been using bamboo combs and toothbrushes. We promote local handmade elephant grass dustbins with local textile as the lining, in our pledge against plastic use. We promote local handmade ceramics as much as possible for the Restaurant too. We are totally against the use of plastic straws and cups or saucers in the property. Instead we use local leaf plates for our local eatery outlet, The Bara Shop.
We have been using plastic bottles for drinking water in the guest rooms which we are planning to replace by sealed glass water bottles by the end of 2025.

Safe Garbage Disposal
We have a system of segregation of garbage at source in our property. We then transfer the garbage to the collectors from the Municipality. The local municipality of Bhaktapur is very progressive in recycling, reuse and safe disposal.

SOCIAL IMPACT

We take steps to have a positive impact on our community.

We have tried to balance the hiring between locales and seasoned professionals, keeping in mind service quality and local skill building. We intend to build competence in the local community to support the services of the property. This is a work in progress for us as a team, yet we have tried to creatively use the strength of the local community to offer innovative services. One of our F&B outlet, Bara Shop, is led and managed by a local woman( with previous experience of running similar outlet of her own) to give the flavor of how a local eatery in Bhaktapur operates.
Similarly, we have tied up with local experts to offer experiences to our guests in our Signature tours. During our culinary tour, we take our guests to local beaten rice manufacturing unit , cooking oil manufacturing and dispensing unit to give the flavor of Bhaktapur. We contribute a portion of the revenue generated by the tour to incentivise these units who are still preserving the traditional methods. We also help the local curd making, which is a famous tourist attraction.
We have tied up with local priests to deliver stories of the local rituals and scriptures in our story telling room. We have local experts on music, dance, crafts and story tellers to deliver their experiences to the guests in our story telling room.
We promote exploring the town like a local with local experts and take them to local interesting places . We also take them to local families to experience their livelihood as well as dining experience.
We have also curated experiences to preserve and regenerate the practices and rituals of our town. One such experience we have curated is the Visit to the Living goddess. This can be an immense contribution to the local tradition of the Living Goddess. The contribution of the success of this tour can help the family immensely in their livelihood.

SENIORS

Bhaktapur is a medieval town and most of the experiences are walking tours. Most of the locations for activities are also in walking distance. The property also does not have lift. These have to be considered for the senior guests.
